Methanogens are a group of strictly anaerobic archaebacteria found in habitats like marshy areas, the rumen of cattle, and anaerobic sludge, which produce methane gas as they break down organic matter.

Methanogens are chemically and evolutionarily distinct archaebacteria that thrive in oxygen-free (anaerobic) environments such as marshy/waterlogged land, the rumen (a specialised part of the stomach) of ruminant animals like cattle and buffaloes, and anaerobic sludge in sewage treatment plants. As they metabolise cellulose and other organic material in these environments, they generate methane (CH₄) gas as a byproduct.
