If the A-group father is Iᴬi and the B-group mother is Iᴮi, their children can be AB, A, B or O — explaining how one child is AB and another is O.

From the CBSE/NCERT Principles of Inheritance and Variation chapter, ABO blood groups follow multiple alleles (Iᴬ, Iᴮ, i) with Iᴬ and Iᴮ co-dominant and i recessive.

For an AB child, one parent must give Iᴬ and the other Iᴮ. For an O child (ii), each parent must carry a hidden i. So:

  • Father (blood group A) = Iᴬi
  • Mother (blood group B) = Iᴮi

Punnett square (Iᴬi × Iᴮi):

Iᴮi
IᴬIᴬIᴮ (AB)Iᴬi (A)
