Amniocentesis analyses foetal cells from amniotic fluid to detect chromosomal disorders; its correct use is medical diagnosis, its misuse is illegal sex-selective abortion.

Amniocentesis is a foetal-sex-determination/prenatal-diagnostic technique in which a small sample of amniotic fluid surrounding the developing foetus is withdrawn. This fluid contains foetal cells that are cultured and their chromosomes analysed karyotypically.

Use: Because the sex chromosome composition (XX or XY) and chromosome number can be examined, amniocentesis is genuinely valuable for detecting chromosomal abnormalities such as Down's syndrome (trisomy 21), other aneuploidies, and certain genetic/metabolic disorders in the foetus early in pregnancy, allowing for timely medical decisions and care.
