Amniocentesis is a legitimate prenatal diagnostic technique for detecting genetic abnormalities, but because it also reveals foetal sex, it was widely misused for female foeticide — hence the legal ban on using it for sex determination is fully justified.

Amniocentesis is a foetal-sex determination technique based on the chromosomal pattern in the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing embryo, and it can also detect various genetic/metabolic disorders.
