Triple fusion is the second fertilisation event in flowering plants: one sperm cell fuses with two polar nuclei to give a 3n endosperm nucleus.

After the pollen tube enters the embryo sac (usually through the micropyle), it releases two male gametes into the cytoplasm of the synergid. Of these:

  1. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (syngamy) to form the diploid zygote.
  2. The other male gamete moves to the centre of the embryo sac and fuses with the two polar nuclei present in the central cell. Since this event involves the fusion of three haploid nuclei (one male gamete + two polar nuclei), it is called triple fusion. …
