Two male gametes fuse inside the embryo sac — one with the egg (zygote) and one with the polar nuclei (endosperm); this double fertilisation gives both the embryo and its food-store.

What happens. After pollination, the pollen tube discharges two male gametes into the embryo sac. Two fusion events occur:

  1. Syngamy (fertilisation): one male gamete fuses with the egg cell → a diploid zygote (2n2n), which forms the embryo.
  2. Triple fusion: the other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the secondary/central-cell nucleus) → a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) (3n3n), which develops into the endosperm.

Because two fusions involving two male gametes happen in the same embryo sac, the phenomenon is called double fertilisation (discovered by Nawaschin).

Importance.

  • It produces the zygote/embryo (the future plant) and the endosperm (nutritive tissue) at the same time. …
