Alcohols, phenols and ethers are the three families of oxygen-containing compounds taken up in this unit. All three carry an oxygen atom in place of a hydrogen of a hydrocarbon skeleton, but they differ in how that oxygen is bonded — a hydroxyl group directly on a saturated carbon (alcohol), a hydroxyl group directly on an aromatic ring carbon (phenol), or an oxygen linking two carbon groups (ether). …
