Uses of Carboxylic Acids

Carboxylic acids are not just a functional group to name and prepare — several of them are everyday industrial chemicals. This section lists the acids the NCERT syllabus singles out for their practical applications.

Methanoic Acid (Formic Acid)

HCOOH\text{HCOOH}

The simplest carboxylic acid finds application across several process industries. It is used in the rubber industry (as a coagulant for latex), in textile and dyeing processing, in leather processing (tanning/dehairing), and in electroplating baths.

Ethanoic Acid (Acetic Acid)

CH3COOH\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}

Ethanoic acid serves two everyday roles:

  • as a general-purpose solvent in organic and industrial chemistry
  • as vinegar (a dilute aqueous solution) in the food industry, where it is used as a preservative and flavouring agent

Hexanedioic Acid (Adipic Acid)

HOOC−(CH2)4−COOH\text{HOOC}-(\text{CH}_2)_4-\text{COOH}

This dicarboxylic acid is the key industrial precursor used in the manufacture of nylon-6,6, one of the most widely produced synthetic polyamide fibres. Its two –COOH groups let it condense with a diamine to build up the long polymer chain.

Benzoic Acid and Its Derivatives

C6H5COOH\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{COOH}

Benzoic acid itself is not consumed directly for these uses — it is converted into two different derivatives, each exploited for a distinct property:

  • Esters of benzoic acid (formed with various alcohols) are used in perfumery, valued for their pleasant fragrance. …
