(a) Divide the total charge by the electronic charge to get the electron count. (b) The two dipole forces form a couple whose torque works out to pEsin⁡θpE\sin\theta.

(a) Number of electrons in 1 C:

Each electron carries charge of magnitude e=1.6×10−19 Ce = 1.6\times10^{-19}\text{ C}. The number of electrons whose combined charge is 1 C:

n=Qe=11.6×10−19≈6.25×1018 electronsn = \frac{Q}{e} = \frac{1}{1.6\times10^{-19}} \approx 6.25\times10^{18}\text{ electrons}

(b) Torque on an electric dipole in a uniform field:

Consider a dipole of charges +q+q and −q-q separated by distance 2a2a, dipole moment p=q(2a)p = q(2a), placed at angle θ\theta to a uniform field E⃗\vec{E}.

  • Force on +q+q: qEqE along E⃗\vec{E}.
  • Force on −q-q: qEqE opposite to E⃗\vec{E}.

These two equal and opposite forces form a couple (net force = 0, but net torque ≠ 0 since they act along different lines).
