(a) A hydrogen bond forms between H attached to F/O/N and a nearby lone pair on an electronegative atom. (b) PCl5's P atom is sp3d hybridised (5 hybrid orbitals: 1s+3p+1d), giving a trigonal bipyramidal shape.

(a) Hydrogen bond: A hydrogen bond is a weak type of attractive (electrostatic) interaction that occurs when a hydrogen atom, covalently bonded to a small, highly electronegative atom (typically F, O, or N), experiences an additional attraction toward a lone pair of electrons on another highly electronegative atom (F, O, or N), either in the same molecule (intramolecular) or a neighbouring molecule (intermolecular). Because F/O/N pull electron density strongly away from H, the H atom develops a significant partial positive charge, which is then attracted to a nearby lone pair. Though much weaker than a covalent or ionic bond, hydrogen bonding significantly affects physical properties like boiling point, melting point, viscosity, and solubility (e.g., it is responsible for water's unusually high boiling point and for DNA's double helix structure).
