The electrochemical series ranks elements by standard reduction potential, and this ranking directly predicts oxidising/reducing strength and whether a redox reaction will proceed.

The electrochemical (activity) series is a list of elements (typically metals, along with hydrogen) arranged in order of their standard electrode (reduction) potentials, E°. Species with a highly negative E° (like Li, K, Na) are strong reducing agents (they lose electrons easily), while species with a highly positive E° (like F2, Au3+) are strong oxidising agents (they readily gain electrons).

Main uses of the electrochemical series:

  1. Predicting feasibility of a redox reaction: a reaction is spontaneous if the species being reduced lies below (has a higher E°/more positive reduction potential than) the species being oxidised in the series.
  2. Predicting displacement reactions: a metal higher in the series (more reactive, more negative E°) can displace a metal lower in the series from its salt solution (e.g., Zn displaces Cu2+ from CuSO4 solution).
  3. Identifying relative strength of oxidising and reducing agents. …
