Starting from the kinetic-theory pressure formula for two different gases at the same P, V, T, and using the fact that average KE per molecule depends only on T, one derives that they must contain equal numbers of molecules — Avogadro's law.

Consider two different gases, 1 and 2, occupying the same volume V, at the same pressure P and same temperature T. From kinetic theory, the pressure of each gas is:

P = (1/3)(N1 m1 v̄1^2)/V ...(gas 1)

P = (1/3)(N2 m2 v̄2^2)/V ...(gas 2)

Since both equal the same P and V:

N1 m1 v̄1^2 = N2 m2 v̄2^2 ...(i)

Since both gases are at the same temperature T, the average kinetic energy PER MOLECULE is the same for both (from the kinetic-theory result (1/2)mv̄^2 = (3/2)kT, which depends only on T, not on which gas it is):

(1/2) m1 v̄1^2 = (1/2) m2 v̄2^2

⟹ m1 v̄1^2 = m2 v̄2^2 ...(ii)

Dividing (i) by (ii):

N1 = N2
