The law of equipartition of energy: in thermal equilibrium, each degree of freedom of a molecule (each independent quadratic term in its energy expression) contributes on average (1/2)k_BT of energy.

A gas molecule can store energy in different independent 'modes' or degrees of freedom — translational motion along x, y, z; rotational motion about different axes; and vibrational motion (which itself has both kinetic and potential parts). The law of equipartition of energy, derived from kinetic theory/statistical mechanics, states that in thermal equilibrium at temperature T, each such degree of freedom whose energy is a quadratic function of a coordinate or momentum (e.g. ½mv_x², ½Iω²) contributes, on average, exactly (1/2)k_BT of energy per molecule (k_B = Boltzmann's constant), regardless of the nature of the degree of freedom.
