From the kinetic theory of gases, pressure and average kinetic energy per unit volume are related by P = (2/3)E.

From kinetic theory, for a gas of density ρ and mean square molecular speed v̄^2:

P = (1/3) ρ v̄^2

The average translational kinetic energy of the gas PER UNIT VOLUME is:

E = (1/2) ρ v̄^2

So ρv̄^2 = 2E. Substituting into the pressure expression:

P = (1/3)(2E) = (2/3)E
