Absolute zero is the temperature at which the average translational kinetic energy of gas molecules becomes zero.

From the kinetic theory of gases, the average kinetic energy per molecule of an ideal gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature:

As the temperature TT is lowered, the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules decreases proportionally. Absolute zero (0 K, i.e. −273.15°C-273.15°C) is defined, on the basis of this relation, as the temperature at which KE‾→0\overline{KE} \to 0 — i.e., the temperature at which the random translational motion of the gas molecules would theoretically come to a complete stop.
