Kinetic theory models a gas as a large number of tiny, randomly-moving, elastically-colliding molecules obeying Newton's laws.

The postulates (basic assumptions) of the kinetic theory of gases are:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of identical molecules that are in continuous, random motion.
  2. The size of a gas molecule is negligibly small compared to the average distance between molecules (molecules are treated as point masses).
  3. Molecules exert no force on one another, and on the walls of the container, except during a collision (i.e., there are no intermolecular forces except at the instant of collision).
  4. Collisions between molecules, and between molecules and the walls of the container, are perfectly elastic — kinetic energy is conserved in each collision (though it may be redistributed among the colliding molecules).
  5. Between collisions, molecules move in straight lines with constant velocity, obeying Newton's laws of motion.
  6. The time spent in a collision is negligible compared to the time between successive collisions (the time of a molecular collision is much smaller than the time interval between two successive collisions). …
