Heat transfer is the process by which thermal energy moves from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. It occurs by three modes: conduction (through a medium without bulk motion of the medium - mainly in solids), convection (via movement of fluid particles), and radiation (via electromagnetic waves, needing no medium).
Convection: When part of a fluid is heated, it expands, becomes less dense than the surrounding cooler fluid, and rises due to buoyancy; cooler, denser fluid flows in to take its place, gets heated in turn, and rises as well. This sets up a continuous circulating flow called a convection current, which physically transports heat energy from the hotter region to the cooler region, along with the moving fluid particles themselves.
