Fayol's principle of Scalar Chain states that there should be a formal line of authority stretching in a straight (unbroken) line from the highest to the lowest rank in the organisation. According to this principle:

- this maintains order and discipline in the flow of information.
Gang plank — Following the chain strictly can cause delay when two persons at the same level in different departments need to communicate urgently. To solve this, Fayol suggested a 'gang plank' (bridge) — a direct, horizontal contact between two employees of the same rank — so they can communicate directly in an emergency without routing the message all the way up and down the chain, provided their superiors are informed.
