An ecosystem is the functional unit combining a biotic community with its abiotic environment; it has abiotic and biotic components, and energy/matter flow through it via a sequence of feeding (trophic) levels.

i) Ecosystem: An ecosystem is a functional unit of nature comprising all the living organisms (biotic community) of an area, interacting among themselves and with their surrounding physical (abiotic) environment, through which there is a continuous exchange of matter and energy.

ii) Components of an ecosystem:

  • Abiotic components: the non-living physico-chemical factors, including climatic factors (temperature, light, humidity, rainfall) and edaphic factors (soil type, minerals, water, pH).
  • Biotic components: the living organisms, further divided into:
    • Producers (autotrophs) - green plants and other photosynthetic organisms that fix solar energy into chemical energy.
    • Consumers (heterotrophs) - primary consumers (herbivores, eat producers), secondary consumers (small carnivores, eat primary consumers), and tertiary consumers (top carnivores).
    • Decomposers (saprotrophs, e.g. bacteria and fungi) - break down dead organic matter (detritus) and recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.

iii) Trophic levels (diagrammatic representation, described):

   Producers (green plants)

   Primary consumers (herbivores) …
