In active immunity, the individual's own immune system produces antibodies against a pathogen/antigen, resulting in lasting immunological memory.

Active immunity is acquired when the body is exposed to an antigen — either through a natural infection by a pathogen, or artificially through vaccination — and the immune system responds by producing its own antibodies (and memory B/T cells) against that antigen.
