Spermatogenesis converts diploid germ cells in the testis into haploid, motile sperm through mitotic multiplication, meiotic division, and structural transformation (spermiogenesis), under hormonal control.

Spermatogenesis takes place inside the seminiferous tubules of the testes and involves the following stages:

  1. Multiplication phase: the diploid (2n) germ cells lining the tubule wall, called spermatogonia, undergo repeated mitotic divisions to increase in number.
  2. Growth phase: some spermatogonia periodically enlarge and become primary spermatocytes (still diploid, 2n).
  3. Meiosis I: each primary spermatocyte undergoes the first (reductional) meiotic division to form two haploid (n) secondary spermatocytes.
  4. Meiosis II: each secondary spermatocyte quickly undergoes the second meiotic division to produce two haploid spermatids; so one primary spermatocyte ultimately gives rise to four spermatids. …
