Spermatogenesis is the process, occurring in the seminiferous tubules, by which diploid spermatogonia are converted into haploid, motile sperm through mitotic multiplication, meiotic reduction and structural transformation (spermiogenesis).

A labelled schematic diagram of spermatogenesis (drawn as a vertical flow of cells within a seminiferous tubule, from its outer wall toward the lumen) should show the following stages, each clearly labelled:

  1. Spermatogonia (2n) - diploid germ cells located at the periphery (basement membrane) of the seminiferous tubule; they multiply by mitosis.
  2. Primary spermatocyte (2n) - a spermatogonium that grows in size and enters meiosis I (the cell type actually undergoing the first meiotic division).
  3. Secondary spermatocytes (n) - two haploid cells produced by meiosis I from each primary spermatocyte; each promptly undergoes meiosis II.
  4. Spermatids (n) - four haploid, non-motile round cells produced (from each primary spermatocyte) after meiosis II. …
