A biogas plant is essentially an anaerobic digester where methanogenic bacteria ferment cattle dung slurry to produce combustible biogas, described here in words since a drawn figure cannot be rendered in text.

A typical biogas ('gobar gas') plant consists of the following labelled parts:

  1. Mixing/inlet chamber — where cattle dung (or other biodegradable waste) is mixed with water to form a slurry.
  2. Inlet pipe — through which the slurry is fed into the digester tank.
  3. Digester (fermentation) tank — a large dome-shaped tank, mostly built underground, where the slurry is fermented anaerobically. It houses anaerobic (methanogenic) bacteria, including species of Methanobacterium, that break down the cellulosic and other organic matter in the slurry.
  4. Gas holder (floating or fixed dome) — sits above the digester and collects the biogas (rich in methane) as it is produced.
  5. Gas outlet pipe — carries the collected biogas out for use as fuel (cooking, lighting, or running engines). …
