DNA and RNA differ mainly in the sugar in their nucleotides, one of their pyrimidine bases, and their typical number of strands.

Three important differences between DNA and RNA:

  1. Sugar: DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose (2'-deoxyribose), while RNA contains ribose (which has an extra -OH group at the 2' carbon).
  2. Pyrimidine base: DNA contains the base Thymine, whereas RNA contains Uracil in place of thymine (Uracil pairs with adenine in RNA, just as thymine does in DNA).
