In nature, a population usually does not have unlimited resources to support exponential growth indefinitely; food availability, space and other resources become limiting as the population grows. The population of an organism in such a habitat, with limited resources, grows in a characteristic sigmoid (S-shaped) curve — called logistic growth.
Under logistic growth, a population first grows nearly exponentially when resources are abundant, but as population density (N) increases and approaches the carrying capacity (K) — the maximum population size that a particular environment can sustain — resource availability for each individual declines, so the growth rate progressively decreases, and the population size stabilises at K.
