Aneuploidy results from non-disjunction during meiosis/mitosis, causing loss or gain of a chromosome; Down's syndrome is one such trisomy disorder with characteristic physical and intellectual features.

During normal cell division, homologous chromosomes (in meiosis I) or sister chromatids (in meiosis II/mitosis) must separate cleanly to daughter cells. Occasionally this segregation fails -- a phenomenon called non-disjunction -- so that one gamete/daughter cell receives both members of a chromosome pair and another receives none. When such a gamete (with an extra or missing chromosome) fuses with a normal gamete at fertilisation, the resulting individual has one chromosome more or less than the normal diploid number -- this condition is called aneuploidy (e.g., trisomy = 2n+1, monosomy = 2n-1). Down's syndrome is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21 (an individual has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two), typically due to non-disjunction during the mother's meiosis.
