When an alkyl chloride or alkyl bromide is heated with an inorganic fluoride such as AgF (silver fluoride), Hg2F2 (mercurous fluoride), CoF2 (cobalt(II) fluoride) or SbF3 (antimony trifluoride), only the chlorine/bromine atom is selectively replaced by fluorine (halogen exchange). This is called the Swarts reaction, and it is the general method for preparing alkyl fluorides, since fluorine cannot easily be introduced by direct reaction with F2 (too vigorous/uncontrollable) or via HF (poor reactivity in …
