Lanthanoid contraction is the regular decrease in atomic and M3+ ionic radii across the lanthanoid series, caused by the poor shielding ability of 4f electrons, which lets the effective nuclear charge rise steadily.

As we move across the lanthanoid series from Ce (Z=58) to Lu (Z=71), each successive element has one more proton in the nucleus AND one more electron added to the inner 4f subshell.

The 4f orbitals are diffuse/have poor overlap with each other, so a 4f electron shields another 4f electron from the nuclear charge very INEFFICIENTLY (much less effectively than, say, an inner s or p electron would shield an outer electron).

As a result, with each added proton, the effective nuclear charge (Zeff) felt by the outer electrons increases steadily (since the added 4f electron does not fully compensate for the added proton). This pulls the electron cloud inward, causing a small but CUMULATIVE decrease in atomic/ionic radius at each step across the series - this overall shrinkage is called lanthanoid contraction.
