Lanthanide contraction - the gradual shrinkage of atomic/ionic size across the 14 lanthanide elements (Ce to Lu, due to poor shielding by 4f electrons and increasing effective nuclear charge) - occurs in between the second (4d) and third (5d) transition series.

Normally, radii would be expected to increase noticeably from the 4d to the 5d series (as happens from 3d to 4d) due to the addition of an extra electron shell. However, because the 5d series is preceded by the filling of the 4f (lanthanide) orbitals, the lanthanide contraction almost exactly offsets this expected size increase. As a result, elements in the same group of the second (4d, e.g. Zr, Nb, Mo) and third (5d, e.g. Hf, Ta, W) transition series have almost identical atomic/ionic radii - much closer than corresponding 3d/4 …
