Rutherford's nuclear model correctly located the atom's positive charge and mass in a tiny nucleus, but classical electromagnetic theory applied to his model predicted that atoms could not be stable and could not emit sharp spectral lines - both contradicted by experiment.

i) Two drawbacks of Rutherford's atomic model:

  1. Instability of the atom: according to classical electromagnetic theory, an accelerating (orbiting) charge must continuously radiate energy. An electron revolving around the nucleus is constantly accelerating (centripetal acceleration), so it should continuously lose energy, spiral inward, and collapse into the nucleus within a fraction of a second - but atoms are observed to be stable.
