A uniformly (positively) charged hollow cylinder behaves like a long line of charge in its central region: field lines emerge perpendicular to the curved surface and point radially outward. Near the open ends the symmetry breaks, so the lines fringe (spread and curve) outward. The field inside a very long such cylinder is essentially zero.

Concept

Field lines start on positive charge and must leave a conductor/charged surface normal to the surface. Symmetry sets the overall pattern.

Description of the field-line sketch

  1. Central region (away from the ends): By the near-cylindrical symmetry the field points radially outward, perpendicular to the curved surface, uniformly spaced around the circumference — just like the field of an infinitely long charged cylinder/line, E∝1rE \propto \dfrac{1}{r} outside it.
  2. Inside the hollow (for a long cylinder): applying Gauss's law to a coaxial cylinder enclosing no charge gives E≈0E \approx 0 in the interior. …
