Q.The electric field lines around three point charges A, B and C are shown. Around charge A (on the left) field lines emerge and curve outward into the surrounding region. Charges B (upper right) and C (just below B) lie close together; a bundle of about seven field lines runs vertically between them, directed from C upward into B, and in addition a further set of field lines spreads outward (downward and to the sides) away from C. The number of field lines attached to A is the smallest of the three, while the number attached to C is the largest.

Lines emerge from A and from C, so both are positive; lines enter B, so B is negative. C carries the most lines, so it has the largest magnitude. A field null can occur near the weakest charge, A.
(a) Signs
Field lines originate on positive charge and terminate on negative charge.
- Lines emerge from A ⇒ A is positive.
- Lines leave C (up into B and outward below) ⇒ C is positive.
- Lines enter B ⇒ B is negative.
(b) Largest magnitude
The magnitude of a charge is proportional to the number of field lines attached to it. C has the greatest number of lines (the bundle running to B plus the extra lines spreading outward), so C has the largest magnitude.
