Radioactive decay follows N = N_0 e^(-lambda t) from dN/dt = -lambda N; the decay curve is a falling exponential, and T_half/tau = ln2 = 0.693.

Rutherford-Soddy law of radioactive decay:

The number of nuclei disintegrating per unit time is directly proportional to the number of undecayed (parent) nuclei present at that instant.

Derivation:

dN/dt is proportional to -N, so

dN/dt = -lambda N, where lambda = decay constant.

Separating variables: dN/N = -lambda dt.

Integrating from N_0 (at t = 0) to N (at time t):

ln(N/N_0) = -lambda t

=> N = N_0 e^(-lambda t).
