Why this works. Multiplying by 8 shifts the octal point one place right, so the integer part that appears is the next octal digit. A repeated carry-fraction means the expansion recurs.
Working for (0.675)10:
| Step | Multiplication | Integer part (digit) | Fractional part carried on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.675 x 8 = 5.4 | 5 | 0.4 |
| 2 | 0.4 x 8 = 3.2 | 3 | 0.2 |
| 3 | 0.2 x 8 = 1.6 | 1 | 0.6 |
| 4 | 0.6 x 8 = 4.8 | 4 | 0.8 |
| 5 | 0.8 x 8 = 6.4 | 6 | 0.4 |
After step 5 the carried fraction is 0.4 — already seen after step 1 — so the digits of steps 2-5 (3, 1, 4, 6) repeat forever:
(0.675)10 = (0.5 3146 3146 3146 ...)8 ~ (0.53146)8
Verification of the 5-digit approximation:
5/8 + 3/64 + 1/512 + 4/4096 + 6/32768 = 0.674987... ~ 0.675 ✓
