Osmoregulation is the active regulation of water and salt balance that keeps the osmotic concentration of an animal's body fluids constant.

Every cell in the body works best when the fluid around it has a fairly fixed concentration of water and dissolved substances. If the body took in or lost water and salts freely, this internal balance would swing wildly. Osmoregulation is the control system that prevents that: it is the maintenance of a steady water and electrolyte balance so that the osmotic concentration of the body fluids remains constant.

To achieve this the body carefully matches what comes in against what goes out:

  • Water gained by drinking and from food is balanced against water lost in urine, sweat and breathing.
  • Salts and ions taken in are balanced against those removed, so their concentration in the blood and tissue fluid does not drift. …
