Judging each drawn pair: (a) two pentanones differing in where the carbonyl sits are

structural isomers (metamers); (b) the two arrangements of the groups about the

C=C are geometrical (cis–trans) isomers; (c) the two forms of protonated formic

acid are resonance contributors of one species.

To classify a pair, ask what differs. Different connectivity → structural isomers;

same connectivity but different spatial arrangement about a rigid bond → geometrical

isomers; only the electrons moved, atoms fixed → resonance contributors.

(a) The two structures are pentan-2-one (CHX3COCHX2CHX2CHX3\ce{CH3COCH2CH2CH3}) and pentan-3-one

(CHX3CHX2COCHX2CHX3\ce{CH3CH2COCH2CH3}) — same molecular formula, same ketone group, but the carbonyl (and

hence the alkyl groups flanking it) sit differently. They are structural isomers

(metamers).

(b) The two structures show the same atoms about a C=C\ce{C=C} double bond arranged on …
