By alligation the quantities sold at 18%18\% and 28%28\% gain are in the ratio (28−24):(24−18)=2:3(28-24):(24-18)=2:3; of 100100 kg this is 4040 kg and 6060 kg.

Rule of alligation (on percentage gain):

Qty at lower gainQty at higher gain=Higher gain−Mean gainMean gain−Lower gain\frac{\text{Qty at lower gain}}{\text{Qty at higher gain}}=\frac{\text{Higher gain}-\text{Mean gain}}{\text{Mean gain}-\text{Lower gain}}

11 quintal =100=100 kg.

  1. Given: lower gain =18%=18\%, higher gain =28%=28\%, mean (overall) gain =24%=24\%, total wheat =100=100 kg.
  2. Apply alligation: qty at 18%qty at 28%=28−2424−18=46=23\dfrac{\text{qty at }18\%}{\text{qty at }28\%}=\dfrac{28-24}{24-18}=\dfrac{4}{6}=\dfrac{2}{3}.
  3. Divide 100 kg in ratio 2:32:3 (total 55 parts):
    • Qty at 18%=100×25=4018\%=100\times\dfrac{2}{5}=40 kg.
    • Qty at 28%=100×35=6028\%=100\times\dfrac{3}{5}=60 kg. …
