The accounting cycle flows: Journal → Ledger → Trial Balance → Final Accounts (Trading & P&L A/c, Balance Sheet). Each step depends on the correctness of the step before it.

The Trial Balance's entire purpose is to check, using the simple arithmetic fact that total debits must equal total credits across the whole ledger, whether the posting from the Journal to the Ledger has been done correctly. If this check were skipped and Final Accounts were prepared directly from the Ledger, any arithmetical slip — a wrong casting, a missed posting, a figure copied incorrectly — could flow straight through into the Gross Profit, Net Profit and Balance Sheet figures, potentially producing a Balance Sheet that does not even balance (Assets ≠ Liabilities + Capital), with no easy way to know at what stage the error crept in. …
