The Trial Balance's check is purely arithmetical: does the sum of all debit balances equal the sum of all credit balances? Agreement is necessary — if it fails to agree, something is definitely wrong and must be investigated before Final Accounts can safely proceed. But agreement is not sufficient to declare the books fully correct, because several classes of genuine error still leave both column totals exactly equal.

An error the Trial Balance WOULD catch: Wages paid ₹7,000 is journalised correctly (Wages A/c Dr. ₹7,000, To Cash A/c ₹7,000), but when posting, Cash A/c is credited with only ₹700 by a slip of the pen. Now the debit side carries ₹7,000 while the corresponding credit carries only ₹700 — the Trial Balance's two column totals will differ by ₹6,300, and this will be caught. …
