- Repatriation of profits. A large share of profits earned in the host country is eventually sent back to the parent company in the home country as dividends, rather than being reinvested locally — often seen as a leakage of the host economy's wealth.
- Threat to domestic small-scale industry. With their far greater capital, technology and marketing strength, MNCs can out-compete and even displace smaller domestic and small-scale units.
- Possible exploitation of cheap local labour and resources. Some MNCs are drawn to a host country precisely for its lower labour/resource costs, and may not always match home-country wage or safety standards.
- Over-dependence on foreign technology. Relying too heavily on MNCs for technology, rather than building domestic research capability, can leave the host country permanently dependent on foreign firms.
- Disproportionate economic and cultural influence. The sheer size of large MNCs can give them outsized bargaining power with host governments and influence local consumption patterns through aggressive marketing. …
