Before 1991, India's restrictive industrial-licensing regime limited MNC entry. The New Economic Policy of 1991 (liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation) relaxed these restrictions and actively opened the economy to foreign direct investment, after which MNCs became a significant and visible part of several sectors:

  • Automobiles. Global automobile MNCs entered through joint ventures and wholly owned subsidiaries, transforming the Indian passenger-vehicle and two-wheeler market and turning India into an export manufacturing base for the sector.
  • Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). Long-established MNC brands in food, beverages and personal care products remain among the most widely sold consumer brands across urban and rural India.
  • Information Technology and software services. MNC development and back-office centres in Indian cities have contributed substantially to software exports and skilled employment, even as several Indian IT companies have themselves grown into MNCs operating abroad.
  • Telecommunications. Foreign telecom MNCs, entering directly or through joint ventures after sector liberalisation, contributed to the rapid growth of mobile telephony and internet access in India. …
