Infrastructure — the basic support system of an economy — is generally divided into two categories.

Economic infrastructure covers facilities that directly support production, distribution and trade activities. Examples include power (electricity generation and supply), transport (roads, railways, ports, airports) and communication (telecommunications, the internet, postal services). Without adequate economic infrastructure, firms and farmers face higher costs, delays and wastage in producing and moving goods and services.

Social infrastructure covers facilities that build the quality and capability of a country's human resources. Examples include education (schools, colleges, vocational training) and health (hospitals, clinics, public health systems), along with related facilities like housing and sanitation. Social infrastructure does not directly move goods or generate power, but it raises the skills, health and productivity of the workforce that operates every sector of the economy.
