No single measure captures body composition fully, so the three are used together because each has a distinct strength and a distinct blind spot:
- BMI (weight/height², kg/m²) gives a quick indicator of overall weight-for-height and screens a population cheaply — but it cannot separate fat from muscle or bone and ignores fat location.
- WHR (waist/hip, unitless) reveals the distribution of fat — whether it is centrally stored (abdominal obesity, risk at ≥0.90 men / ≥0.85 women) — which BMI cannot show, but it says nothing about total fatness.
