Step 1. Cell type and organisation. Monera is the one kingdom, out of the five in Whittaker's scheme, whose members are prokaryotic - they have no true, membrane-bound nucleus and no membrane-bound organelles (no mitochondria, no endoplasmic reticulum, no Golgi bodies); their level of organisation is unicellular.

Step 2. Cell wall. Where a cell wall is present, it is made of peptidoglycan and mucopeptides (chemically quite different from the cellulose walls of plants or the chitin walls of fungi).

Step 3. Nutrition. Monerans are nutritionally very varied - the kingdom includes autotrophs (both phototrophic and chemoautotrophic bacteria) as well as heterotrophs (parasitic and saprophytic bacteria); this mix of nutritional modes within one kingdom is in fact one of the reasons Monera is considered a heterogeneous, imperfect grouping. …
