In marshy or boggy habitats, dead plant material (especially mosses such as Sphagnum, along with sedges and other marsh plants) accumulates faster than it can decompose, because the waterlogged soil is largely deprived of oxygen. Under these anaerobic, acidic conditions, decomposer microorganisms work very slowly and incompletely, so the plant remains do not fully break down. Instead, they compress into a dark brown, fibrous, spongy organic material called PEAT.
