Because plant mitochondria oxidize cytosolic NADH via a bypass pathway that skips Complex I, each cytosolic NADH yields only ~2 ATP (not the usual 3), so 2 molecules of cytosolic NADH give a net of 4 ATP.

Glycolysis, which occurs in the cytosol, produces NADH there. The inner mitochondrial membrane's Complex I (NADH dehydrogenase) can only accept NADH from inside the matrix — the mitochondrial inner membrane is impermeable to cytosolic NADH itself, so plant cells need a way to get those electrons into the electron transport chain.

In animal cells, this is usually solved by shuttle systems (e.g., the malate-aspartate shuttle) that regenerate matrix NADH, allowing full entry through Complex I (yielding the usual ~3 ATP per NADH).
