In a transverse section of a typical dicot stem, moving inward from the surface:
- Epidermis — outermost single layer, often with a cuticle.
- Hypodermis — a few layers just below the epidermis, made of COLLENCHYMA cells (living cells with unevenly thickened corners, made of cellulose, pectin, and hemicellulose). This gives the young, still-growing stem mechanical strength while retaining some flexibility (unlike rigid sclerenchyma).
