Adding up the atomic masses of all atoms in one molecule of ethanol (C2H5OH) gives a relative molecular mass of 46.

The relative molecular mass of a compound is the sum of the relative atomic masses of all the atoms present in one molecule of that compound, taking the atomic mass of carbon-12 as the standard (12 units). Ethanol has the molecular formula C2H5OH, i.e. C2H6O, containing 2 carbon atoms, 6 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

Mass = (2 x 12) + (6 x 1) + (1 x 16) = 24 + 6 + 16 = 46.
