Atoms are far too small for their actual (absolute) mass to be conveniently used in calculations, so chemists compare atomic masses on a relative scale instead. By international (IUPAC) agreement, the carbon-12 isotope is assigned an atomic mass of exactly 12 units, and 1/12th of the mass of one carbon-12 atom is defined as one atomic mass unit (amu or u).
Relative atomic mass = (average mass of one atom of the element) / (1/12 x mass of one C-12 atom)
