Carbon shows the greatest catenation of any element because its C-C bonds are unusually strong and its small atomic size allows extensive, stable chains and rings, including multiple bonds.

Catenation is the ability of atoms of the same element to link together, through covalent bonds, into chains, branched chains, or rings. While several elements in Group 14 (C, Si, Ge, Sn) show some catenation, carbon shows it to by far the greatest extent, which is the whole basis of organic chemistry. This is due to several factors:

  1. Small atomic size: carbon's small radius allows its bonding electron pairs to be held close to the nuclei, giving strong, short C-C bonds.

  2. High C-C bond energy: the C-C single bond (about 348 kJ/mol) is considerably stronger than the corresponding Si-Si, Ge-Ge or Sn-Sn bonds, so carbon chains are thermally and chemically stable rather than breaking apart easily.
